Question

I have just used your boys' puberty calculator and it says that I am in stage 2.8. I am about to move to another school and I am wondering when I can expect to have a growth spurt as I am worrying about bullying because of my height, as I am quite small compared to a lot of people I know. I am around 5 foot 2, whereas they are all at least 5 foot 6. I clicked the 'info about stages page' and I saw that stage 3 is when we grow the most and got wondering whether this could mean I am soon to grow.

Please get back to me as soon as you can.

Answer

Each stage tends to last about two years in males. Everyone grows until they reach stage 5. It is just that you grow faster in stage 3. "Faster" is a relative term. A growth spurt is growing 2 to 4 times faster than your childhood growth rate.

You are likely with 6 months to a year of hitting your growth spurt. In regards to bullying, may I suggest learning some martial arts, such as Tae Kwon Do. In these sports, size doesn't matter and the techniques learned will both level the playing field and give you some confidence.

Thank you very much for clearing that up for me. I am actually going to start karate because my mum thought it was a good idea for the same reasons as you.
