Question

At my youth group, there's this girl that I recently realized I have a huge crush on. What's even better is that she is one of the very few in my youth group that actually loves God with all her heart, most of the other girls go because their boyfriends go, their friends go, or because they want to make friends. The only problem is I never really talk to anyone. I don't know much about her because I can't seem to talk to her. It's hard for me to talk to anyone I'm not already friends with. I tend to be a bit socially awkward most of the time. I don't even know her name. What's your opinion of what I should do?

Answer

Clearly if you say nothing, nothing with result. What drives most shyness is a fear of being rejected. But without the possibility of rejection, there cannot be acceptance. Therefore, you have to work through your fears. A war hero, Eddie Rickenbacker, made a good observation: "Courage is doing what you're afraid to do. There can be no courage unless you're scared."

Since you don't know her name, just introduce yourself. "I hope I'm not being too forward, but my name is ___. I've noticed that you are really passionate about God and I admire that." Notice that it is a compliment that isn't like what most boys would give. It doesn't mention anything physical, but shows you noticed her character. Then see how she responds.
