Do overweight people grow taller?

Last updated on October 1, 2020

Question:

Why are fat people above 6 feet in height? I just saw my friend who was fat and he suddenly shot up to 6 feet. Is it a fact or a myth?

Answer:

It would be a myth. If you are in a region of the world where most people are malnourished. A chubby person would have an advantage over a skinny person because he has extra calories to fuel his growth. But in a region where good nutritious food is readily available, you will not see a difference because of body fat.

There are some studies that indicate that overweight kids tend to develop sooner than skinny kids on average; thus, for a period of time they taller relative to their peers. But when their peers finish their development, there is no detectable difference between fat and skinny people in regards to height.
