I have hair elsewhere on my body, but I can’t seem to grow any facial hair

Question:

Hello.

I’m 179 cm (5′ 10″) tall. I weigh about 76 kg (168 lbs). Now I grow normal body hair on my arms, my legs, and under my armpits. I even started growing hair on my chest and my stomach. What I can’t figure out is that I’m going to turn 17 in a month and I still can’t seem to grow any facial hair at all. Please tell me if there is any need to visit a doctor for this mater.

Thank you very much and please reply as soon as possible.

Answer:

Depending on your heritage, some groups of men don’t have a lot of facial hair. But I assume that is not the case with you. The order of hair growth is roughly:

  1. Arms and legs
  2. Pubic
  3. Underarm
  4. Upper lip
  5. Lower abdomen
  6. Sideburns and chin
  7. Chest
  8. Remainder of face
  9. For some men backs

The order is rough and overlaps heavily. Also for each individual, the order can change. Since you are getting chest hair, I assume, without knowing the other characteristics, that you have reached stage 4 of development. If you look carefully at your upper lip you probably will find fine hairs that don’t have much color (we call it “peach fuzz” over in America). These will darken shortly. Hair will then grow on the sides of your face and on your chin. You won’t be able to grow a full beard until after you’ve reached stage 5 of development. Facial hair development is one of the last things which a man gains and can take until your early twenties to complete — even though your physical height and muscle development finish long before this point.

So, no, you don’t need to see a doctor. You just need to be patient and give yourself several more years to finish developing.
