I have pubic hair, but when will my armpit hair grow?

Question:

Hi!

I’m 14 years old and I have grown pubic hair, but so far I’ve counted maybe three chest hairs.  But my armpits are bare and my penis is about 5 and 1/2 inches long when erect.  Is this a normal size?  And when will my armpit hair grow?

Answer:

Everything doesn’t develop at once, nor do individuals develop in precisely the same order. However, we can discuss general trends and note that eventually everything finishes at the same point.

A few chest hairs at this stage indicate you will probably have a hairy chest when you are an adult. But the few hairs you have now doesn’t mean you have reached Tanner’s stage 5 of development.

When hairs first start to grow, they are fine and light in color. It is possible that some hair is starting to grow under your arms, but you are missing them. But even if they are not, it just means you are probably still in stage 3 of development.

The size of your penis is fairly typical for a fourteen year old at this stage of development.

You’re not done growing by a long shot. So don’t get concerned that it isn’t happening as fast as you would like it to happen. You can use the Tanner Stage Calculator for Boys to estimate where you are in your development.
