What is a good resting heart rate?

Last updated on October 11, 2020

Question:

My heart rate is 79 bpm while resting. Is that good or unhealthy? I feel like I’m fairly fit. I know kids have higher heart rates. I’m a late bloomer, so will it eventually go down?

Answer:

Adults typically have a resting heart rate of between 60 and 100 beats per minute. As you noted, children have a slightly higher resting heart rate between 70 and 100 beats per minute. The more athletic you are, the lower your heart rate will be. Athletics can have a resting heart rate as low as 40 beats per minute. Therefore, your resting heart rate is fine and well within the healthy range.
