Will my other testicle grow when my varicocele is repaired?

Question:

Hi,

I’m 21 years old. I’ve had this lump on my left testicle since I was a child. I went to the general practitioner yesterday, and he is certain it is a varicocele. I’ve been doing some research and it looks right. Now my varicocele is huge but my right testicle is really small. As I’ve finished puberty I’m guessing my right testicle will not grow once I get my problem sorted. Is that correct?

Answer:

A varicocele is when a valve fails in a vein located in your scrotum. The result is that instead of the blood being properly returned from the scrotum, it pools there. It usually aches or is painful because the walls of the vein end up being stretched. Since your blood is warm, it also causes the testicle to be kept too warm for it to produce sperm properly.

Once the varicocele is removed, the testicle on that side should begin functioning properly, unless too much damage occurred to it. Even if it doesn’t function well, the testicle on the other side usually will make up the difference — that is why you have two testicles. You are correct that the other testicle will not grow more. Most likely the two testicles are actually close to the same size but the varicocele just makes the left one appear to be larger than it is.

Question:

Thank you for your help, Jeffrey. It’s a really big varicocele. Do you know which way it will be remove, e.g. surgery, etc.?

Also my penis is really small. Do you know of any safe ways you would say are OK to increase the size?

Thank you for all your help!

Answer:

Surgery is the only way to correct a varicocele problem. See: Varicocele Treatments.

Penis size is measured when you are erect. For an adult male, 3 to 8 inches erect is considered normal. The size of your penis is controlled by your genes. While there are many things claiming to give you a bigger penis, they are all fraudulent claims. However, if you are overweight, losing weight will allow more of your penis to be exposed, thus being bigger.
