Question:
Hello there,
I just wanted to ask, could ciprofloxacin stunt growth? My doctor gave me it, but it was only for 10 days. He said it was enough to cure my otitis media, which it did. But I heard that it could close growth plates.
Answer:
Stunted growth is not one of the listed side-effects of ciprofloxacin. It does say, “Ciprofloxacin may cause problems with bones, joints, and tissues around joints in children.” In particular, there are warnings that it can weaken the tendons while taking the medication and for several months after it is stopped. [Ciprofloxacin, MedlinePlus]. I don’t think you have to be concerned about it affecting your overall growth.
Response:
Thank you for the clarification. I was pretty concerned about it.
