Question:
Why is it that sometimes my voice is deep and then not during random times of the day? At what stage does this occur?
Answer:
This usually happens during stage 4, though it can start in stage 3. What is happening is that your vocal cords have grown longer, which allows for a deep pitch in your voice. Muscles pull on the cords to change the tension and, thus, change your pitch. If the cords are held too loose, they slam into each other, causing you to squeak. The difficulty comes with your brain learning anew just how much tension is needed to produce the right pitch. Therefore, while it is relearning, your pitch changes when you would rather it didn’t. This becomes particularly noticeable when you are distracted, such as talking to a girl or standing in front of the class to give a presentation. The brain focuses on other matters and forgets to regulate the vocal cords.
Eventually, things settle down, and new habits are built.
Question:
When will the voice become permanently deep after it starts?
Answer:
On average, it takes about 13 months for the changes to finish.
