I was picking at what was probably a Fordyce spot and now I think it might be infected

Question:

I have little white spots on my penis and sack. I am pretty sure they are Fordyce spots but there is one that is a bit bigger than the others, I was popping it every day and now I think it might be infected and it is a bit bigger and whiter. I am not sure what it is, but if you can answer that will be great!

Answer:

Yes, you have Fordyce spots like every other male. These are just the oil glands that you can see through your skin because the skin is so thin on your penis and scrotum.  Your popping them only caused wounds and now you have several infections.

I’m going to assume that the infections are bacterial. Get some antibiotic ointment and put it on every spot that looks the least red twice a day. If it improves, keep going until the redness and swelling is gone for at least two days. If it doesn’t change or starts to itch, let me know. If it gets worse, you’ll need to see a doctor because the type of infection you got is deeper than the ointment can take care of.

What you should learn from this is: leave well enough alone. Picking at your skin only leaves you vulnerable to infections. Fordyce spots cause no harm; they are there for a purpose.

Question:

Thank you. It is a relief to know they are harmless. I have spot cream for the face, but I’m pretty sure that is the same thing as antibiotic ointment? So I will just start putting the cream on the big spot right now to see how it goes. I don’t really care about the other ones as you said every male has them.

Thank you once again. I’m very shy, so to tell someone this took a long time for me to do.

Answer:

Acne medication is not the same thing as an antibiotic, though some will kill bacteria. Some are designed to dry out the skin, which will not feel comfortable on your genitals — in fact, it will be painful. So the active ingredient will make a big difference. But another problem with acne medications is that most will bleach the color out of clothing.

You want something that clearly states that it is an antibiotic ointment. Your parents should have some in the medicine cabinet. You don’t need a whole lot, but you must put it on each area that looks red and continue until two days past when the redness is gone. If you don’t, the bacteria build up a resistance to the antibiotic and come back with a vengeance.
