I’m losing hair from my mustache

Question:

Hey Minister,

I hope you are doing well.

I wanted to know why my mustache hairs have been falling recently—maybe two to four daily, and just the ones that are not that thick. They are thinner at the base. What should I do? Is it normal? Could stress or something else cause it?

I also wanted to know why the hair on my face is not as thick as my pubic hair. My chin hairs and some of the mustache hairs are almost the same, but the hairs on my lips are not, and they won’t grow or grow very slowly when they reach a certain size, especially my mustache hairs.

Answer:

Each hair follicle runs on a cycle. The hair grows for a while, pauses, and breaks off. Then the hair resumes growth. The length of the cycle controls the length of the hair. The hairs on top of your head have very long cycles, while those on your arms and legs have short cycles. You don’t notice the hair loss because you have so much hair in the area already.

Stress can interrupt the cycle and cause hairs to break off early, but you constantly lose a few anyway. It is bothersome when it happens to hair you currently have little of. It isn’t a concern because once the hair follicle’s vacation is over, the hair will grow back — often thicker and with more color. Since the vellus hairs are breaking off, I suspect you will see terminal hair take their place in a few months.

Facial hair is one of the last areas to develop. You started developing pubic hair years ago, and it has had more time to develop more hair. Also, pubic hair is curly, so it gives the illusion of being thicker than it really is.

Question:

Thanks, man, I appreciate the work.

I think the hair won’t have a long growing phase until it reaches its full maturity. Currently, my mustache hairs are terminal, but they don’t grow long like other people’s full, mature beards. And chest hair shouldn’t be like pubic hair. All the hairs in the middle of my chest came at the same time, and the part near my genitals came at the same time, I think. Right now, I have 6 or 7 full terminal hairs there, but many long, uncolored vellus hairs.

It’s mostly DHT or testosterone that causes beard or chest hair growth. Does it have anything to do with the androgen receptors there?

All these questions answer many other people’s questions, too. They said their thanks, too.

Answer:

Often, elongating vellus hairs are missed until there are enough of them to be noticeable. Be patient. More hairs will turn terminal, and you won’t be able to count them because there will be too many.

Testosterone and the related DHT are behind many of your male features, including facial and body hair.
