Question:

Hi!

I’m 13 and my right testicle is slightly bigger than my left one. Is this normal? Also, I seem to get erect several times a day and I don’t want to. It is getting to be a problem because my penis is getting bigger and soon I won’t be able to hide it. Is there something wrong with me? Please help.

Answer:

While we like to think ourselves to be perfectly symmetrical, with our left half perfectly matching our right half, the truth is that it is rarely true. It is especially not true while you are growing. It is not at all unusual for one testicle to be bigger than the other for a while. Don’t worry about it, the other testicle will soon catch up.

In regards to frequent erections, this too is a normal part of becoming a man. You have a new capability — being able to have erections — and your brain is trying to figure out when is the proper time to trigger erections. At first it pops up frequently and too often at the most inconvenient times. It even has a name, “spontaneous erections.” Your reaction to it it, “No! Not now!” helps to train the brain. The only bad thing is that it will take several years for the brain to get the hang of things.

By the time you reach full adulthood, it will have calmed down, but in the meantime, you will have to take erections into account. I suspect that one reason baggy clothes are popular with young men is because of erections. Loose shirts that hang down do cover many erections. You can also do some things when you are dressing, such as pointing your penis upwards when you put on your underwear or pointing it down toward one leg so that an erection doesn’t push your pants outwards. It won’t always work, but if you keep one front pocket empty, you can quietly reach in and move your penis to the side when an erection occurs so it is not so noticeable. At worse, you can make a quick trip to the restroom to make an adjustment.

One thing to keep in mind is that erections are more noticeable to you than to anyone else. You feel the pressure and are very aware of it.
