Are my growth plates still open?

Last updated on November 9, 2025

Question:

Hey,

I’m a 15-and-a-half-year-old male. I’m trying to figure out if I still have any height left to grow — or if I can somehow “trigger” another mini growth spurt.

Here are my full details:

  • Current height: 171 cm in the morning, about 169.5 cm during the day
  • Parents’ heights: Father 5’6″ (167.5 cm), Mother 5’0″ (152.5 cm)
  • Puberty: I started early, around age 11 (I could ejaculate then)
  • Growth spurt: Big one between 12–13 years(about 6 inches)
  • Growth since 13: Only around +2 cm in the last 2½ years
  • Tanner stage: ~4.4 (based on an online test)
  • Teeth: Some baby teeth haven’t fallen out yet, and a few new ones are still coming in
  • Body hair: Pubic hair is full, but arm and leg hair are still fine, and armpit hair is uneven (one arm has thick hair and one has fine hair)
  • Sleep: Around 7 hours per night (due to exams)
  • Diet: I eat 3 eggs daily, avoid junk food, and eat moderately well
  • Posture: Good

Given all this:

  • Does a Tanner stage of 4.4 mean my growth plates are still open?
  • Since I had early puberty, could I still gain a few more centimeters naturally?
  • Can better sleep, diet, and exercise help me “trigger” a mini spurt or extend my growth period?
  • Should I get a bone age X-ray to know how much growth potential I have left?
  • My goal height is 5’8.5″ (174 cm) — is it still realistic at my age and stage?

Thanks.

Answer:

When a boy reaches stage 4, his growth plates begin to close. They are fully closed when he reaches stage 5. Your plates will be closed within the next year. In the meantime, you will grow some, but it won’t be a significant amount. Most likely, it will be a centimeter or less.

A healthy diet is necessary to reach your full potential, but you cannot trigger additional growth solely through diet or exercise (unless you have been malnourished and your body tries to make up for lost time).

You can get a bone X-ray, but I suspect it will only confirm what you already know.

Question:

Thanks for the reply. What growth can I fairly expect in this remaining time?  Keep in mind that I try to eat a healthy diet and indulge in junk food only occasionally.

Do the late-erupting teeth give you any idea that there is any potential left?

Answer:

As I mentioned before, I would expect a centimeter or less. I don’t think the late teeth signify anything. I assume you are getting your “wisdom” teeth in at this point, which is normal.

Question:

No, actually, my canines are just erupting, not wisdom teeth.

Answer:

When your canine teeth come in late in your teenage years, it could be due to genetics; however, the most common problem is that the teeth are stuck in the jawbone, a condition known as “impacted.” It can also occur if there is not enough space for the teeth to erupt. Therefore, it is best to consult your dentist to have your teeth evaluated and any potential problems addressed.

However, as I said before, it doesn’t relate to whether you have more growth potential or not.

Response:

Thanks for your time.
