Question:

I am a boy of 17 years of age. My father works as a pastor, but I am afraid to ask my father about sexuality and related stuff. Thus, I would like to know how can I be free of thinking about sex and stuff. What is right or wrong? How would you advise a pastor’s son to behave, feel, think, and act free in relationship to sexuality, community, college, church, etc? Please advise me because I am feeling stressed and don’t know how to behave as a pastor’s son should behave?

Answer:

The rules of behavior do not change between individuals, “For there is no partiality with God” (Romans 2:11). The only thing that might be a factor is that your behavior reflects on your parents’ ability to teach God’s Word. “A foolish son is destruction to his father” (Proverbs 19:13), but this is true no matter what occupation your father holds. What you have to keep in mind is that you don’t live an isolated life. Your choices impact other people.

Thoughts of sex are going to intrude simply because you are older now. With those thoughts will come temptations to find out what sex is like. While the desire for sex is normal and you can’t prevent temptations, it becomes wrong when you want sex so badly that you are willing to sin in order to experience it. Having sex before marriage is wrong (Hebrews 13:4). Therefore, the acts that lead up to intercourse when you are not married also become wrong: nakedness, lewd behavior (Romans 13:1-14), and sexual touching (I Corinthians 7:1). Talking or joking about sex in ways that make it appear that you approve of fornication also becomes wrong (Ephesians 5:3-7). As with any other sin, you cannot expect to go partway toward the sin and believe you can stop.
