How do I marry my girlfriend who is underaged?

Last updated on October 1, 2020

Question:

I recently turned 18 and my girlfriend is 15 but will turn 16 later this year. Her parents are neglecting her in so many ways, and though not abuse, there have been some slaps and punches thrown. I’m begging you if you could find a way for the two of us to get married. Please email me back. I would be more than obliged and grateful if you could help us.

Thank you so much.

Answer:

You did not mention where you live. Marriage laws vary by country and sometimes by regions within a country. Generally, you have to be considered an adult before you can get married. That typically means you have to be 18 years old. Sometimes underaged individuals can get permission to marry if their parents consent. In your case, it doesn’t seem likely that your girlfriend would get her parents’ permission to marry you.

Since you will have to wait a while, the better solution is to look at helping your girlfriend live peaceably with her parents. After all, they will eventually become your in-laws, so you want to be on good terms with them, even if you disagree with them. “Repay no one evil for evil. Have regard for good things in the sight of all men. If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men” (Romans 12:17-18).
