Question:
Hello,
Is it normal to have a dry penis? I am circumcised, so the skin near the head is quite dry and flaky. What can I do?
Thanks.
Answer:
Dry skin on the penis is not normal.

I assume the skin is not red or inflamed since you didn’t mention it. Some possible causes are:
- Using too much strong soap, which strips your skin of its natural oils. This can be a particular problem during the winter months when the air is drier.
- Having an allergic reaction to the laundry soap used to clean your underwear. This would only be a consideration if you recently changed brands.
- Having an allergic reaction to lotions or body powder.
- A fungal infection can cause the skin to become flaky, though this is usually red and itchy.
- Eczema or genital psoriasis can cause dry, flaky skin. However, if you had this, you have had it for some time. It would not be a sudden new problem. Additionally, this tends to be red and itchy.
- Some sexually transmitted diseases can cause dry areas on the penis.
If all you have is dryness, I recommend using an unscented or lightly scented lotion twice a day. Wear loose-fitting clothing to reduce friction in the area. If there is any pain, swelling, or increasing redness, you should see your doctor.
Question:
Hello,
Thanks for the advice. However, the flakes seem to go away on their own when showering, but after a couple of days, they return to their dry, flaky state.
Should I wear looser underwear? Or none at all for a couple of days?
Thanks.
Answer:
Showering would temporarily increase skin moisture, but I would not expect it to last for a few days. I recommend using lotion, as it will retain your skin’s natural moisture.
Some additional questions:
- Are you rubbing your penis frequently to masturbate?
- Does your clothing feel irritating?
- How long have you had this problem?
