Why hasn’t my voice dropped yet?

Last updated on September 7, 2020

Question:

The calculator said I’m at tanner stage 3.7. I am about the same height as people in my grade. My voice has barely changed, while the 12 to 13-year-olds in about the same stage as me have easily noticeably deeper voices than I. Often I accidentally “fake” my voice to be deeper, and sometimes on purpose. Should I face the embarrassment, or continue until my voice becomes deeper?

Answer:

A male’s voice becomes deeper during stage four. So while other boys are roughly the same age as you, some may be farther along in their development. At 12 you are just a little bit ahead of the average in your rate of development. Your voice will likely begin dropping when you get around 14. You’ll just have to be patient.
