Question:
I have a question about muscle growth and height.
First off, I am 15 years old. The doctor says I’m in stage 3 of puberty. I am currently about 5’7″. I believe I emailed you in the past, and you mentioned that I was part of the slower-growing group that tends to stay in stage 3 longer. I’ve also developed a significant amount of muscle tone in my body through weightlifting. However, I want to gain weight. I’ve seen no change in my weight, just my muscles being more defined. Is this because I haven’t hit stage 4 yet?
Also, do you think I can reach 5’10” with my current pubertal stage? My dad is 5’10”, and my mom is 5’2″. I also have no happy trail. I barely have any facial hair, just slightly on my upper lip and chin when I don’t shave for a few days. Does it sound like I’m still in stage 3 as well?
Answer:
I assume you are asking about gaining weight through increased muscle mass. Much of that will have to wait until you are well into stage 4. I should mention that some body types get stronger but don’t bulk up.
The information you provided suggests that you are in stage 3.
Question:
Is it possible for me to reach 5’10”?
Yes, I meant increased weight through muscle mass. I do think I’m an ectomorph, but will I ever look more filled out? I can’t seem to put on any weight, but I’m getting stronger.
Answer:
Is it within the realm of possibility for you to reach 5’10”? Yes, but I can’t guarantee that it will happen. There are too many factors involved.
Males typically start building larger muscles after reaching stage 4. You’re not there yet, so I’m not surprised that you’re not developing larger muscles yet, even though you’re getting stronger.
